Headwaters Peer Groups

Headwaters Peer Groups was started from the passion for finding a better way to do things. With a love of engineering and business, I want to bring my experience and education from both of these endeavors to facilitate others in improving their firms. Engineers can be great businessmen also. Having witnessed more than one firm balance on the brink of bankruptcy with not all of them surviving, my troubleshooting skills kicked in. Just like we apply our engineering education to creating excellence in the projects we deliver, the engineer with an MBA can apply those principles in creating an excellent company. Headwaters Peer Groups is a result of my own participation in peer groups for many years. The collaboration, the trust, and the success was so inspiring that members looked forward to those meetings every time. All of the firms that I participated in peer groups with are still excelling today and still collaborate with others in improving their businesses.

Gary always brought a fresh perspective to the group—not just as a senior executive in a company, but as someone who had been in multiple roles within the company. Owners of small companies often lose sight of the “day-to-day” issues within their companies. Having a knowledgeable, critical thinking non-owner involved in the peer group brought insights that would have been missed. Gary’s insights, thoughts, and ideas were very valuable to the team.

Gary attended many of our quarterly peer group meetings and I found the value of his participation significant. He is organized and thoughtful. Gary brings his extensive educational background to bear on peer group topics, participates with a passion and is very much aware of group dynamics and balance. Gary has natural leadership abilities and a talent to read people without judgment. I would highly recommend participating in any peer group setting with Gary.

Gary Johnson - Bio

I am a graduate of Montana State University with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and a minor in Business Management. I also have an MBA from the University of Montana. In my 25+ year career, I have worked in various roles from project engineering to sales, from managing projects to managing firms. I have worked for very large multi-national companies and very small, less than ten person firms. I have a broad skill set in both engineering and in business. In both I have a passion for finding better and more efficient ways to get things done and improve the bottom line.
