What We Do

Headwaters Peer Groups provides business consulting and peer group creation and facilitation. We are focused on construction industry architectural and engineering consulting organizations. We can provide various business services on a one-off basis to an individual firm, or facilitate membership of multiple firms into a peer group. Through the Application Process we will carefully review each applicant to match them with complementary companies. Peer Groups consist of five to seven companies. We maintain strict confidence and ensure that all peer members are protected through non-disclosure agreements.

Peer Meetings

Peer group initiation begins with a 1 1/2 day face-to-face conference. Each member will spend time presenting their organizations, their challenges and successes. This meeting is the opportunity to get to know each of the participating individuals and their companies. Then, depending upon the group, we will either meet in-person quarterly or meet via video conference monthly. The monthly video conferences will last 2-3 hours depending on group preference. The monthly groups will continue to have a face-to-face meeting once a year.

Headwaters will facilitate these meetings by providing the agenda for each meeting and driving the meeting to stay on track. Headwaters will present on business and project related topics at each of these meetings and aid in peer group discussions relative to specific business issues raised by the peer group. Headwaters' presentations and instructions will focus on a wide range of business topics that are important for companies in the architecture and engineering industries. Every meeting will provide an opportunity for participation by each member, both to provide help to other members and to seek help for their own company.

I’ve found that participating in a peer group to be the single most valuable experience in my education as a senior executive. Listening to others that have similar businesses and needs grapple with the same problems (and successes!) is priceless and has only strengthened my abilities as a leader. All of the knowledge gained in business classes is laid out in real time and in real terms in a peer group. I’ve always walked away with more information, more knowledge, and with the very real sense that—you are not alone!

Consulting

Headwaters will provide research and consulting to an individual firm or to the peer group in general, relative to any issue that cannot be solved in a single meeting to the benefit of all companies. Headwaters will provide detailed analysis of business issues that arise from meetings and then report on these in subsequent meetings. This could range from merely discussing solutions to providing spreadsheets or other documents to the group for their use in their companies. MBA level topics will be discussed at each meeting relative to their role in engineering and architecture firms. Should topics arise where the complexity, or the desire for more in-depth knowledge, require a more specialized approach, Headwaters will arrange for specialists to present and participate in these meetings.

In addition, should any company desire more in-depth one-on-one business consulting Headwaters will propose on that effort separately.

Flexibility

Successful Peer Groups will take on a life of their own. Headwaters Peer Groups encourages this positive growth. As a result, agendas may change, schedules may be modified and often there is an increase in the amount of face-to-face time desired to work on our businesses. There will be opportunities to address these issues at each meeting, so that the peer group experience is more rewarding for each and every member.

The Headwaters Difference

There are other large peer group companies providing this service at significantly higher rates, and less frequently occurring meetings, that require expensive travel commitments on a periodic basis. Very often, while these companies are good at strictly business related consultation, their experience in A&E consulting does not come from first hand experience. Our goal is to have options in scheduling by offering either efficient web-based, interactive meetings on a monthly basis with only one or two face-to-face meetings per year or quarterly meetings. This model is intended to be more cost effective in delivering services and in decreasing travel related expenses. We can then provide this service at a lower rate than competing peer group companies. We use web-based off the shelf solutions that can be accommodated by a typical office computer setup. Additional group interaction will be facilitated by either closed Facebook groups or free software solutions such as Slack, Google, etc.

Email newsletters will be sent specific to the peer group. The upcoming agenda, previous topics, business hints and personal growth items will all be included.
